Magical Clay of the White Carniola Region

We become familiar with clay at our early age. We crawl on soil, grass, water and everywhere else. Parents are not too happy with it. Most parents succeed in preventing us from not doing this anymore. Some succeed in staying in the mud forever. The White Carniola region geographically belongs to the Pannonian Sea, which filled the beautiful valley with seawater. After millennia, the water ran out. The mud was left. People came. With the great desire for survival, they learned the process of firing clay. With the great desire for progress, this process was also (abandoned) forgotten.

Sample 46 is clay from Kanižarica (White Carniola). The recommended firing temperature is 900–1100 °C. The beginning of sintering is at 1100–1250 °C. At 1100 °C shrinkage is 12 % and porosity 7 %.
