The clay pit Lukavci
The clay pit is located in Lukavci in the municipality of Križevci pri Ljutomeru. It has been used since 1874, so from the beginning of pottery and stove making in our family. Until 1973, we also made stove tiles from this clay and then only pottery. The clay is found 2 m below the surface and it is dug manually. The dug clay is transported to our home to the clay deposit, where it is left to freeze for at least one winter. Afterwards, if necessary, the clay is softened with water, ground and processed in the machine. We do not clean the clay because it has no admixtures, such as limestone or other.
Sample 01 is clay from Lukavci (the Prlekija region). The recommended firing temperature is 900–1100 °C. The beginning of sintering is at 1100–1250 °C. At 1100 °C shrinkage is 14 % and porosity 5 %.
